Terrible Startup names - and why it is not their fault

Every tried searching for a domain name for your business.  Yeah. . . you can buy most .Co's, and there are still plenty of available .biz and .us sites, but if you want to be taken seriously and attract any amount of investor funding, your really need a .com to show that you are legit.  Did you read the story from last March about the startup Color and the $350,000 they paid for color.com?  TechCrunch by Robin Wauters

They have since burned through a good chuck of the $41 million in VC and founder funding that they collected trying to figure out what they want to do.  So a domain alone doesn't guarantee success.  And the dotBOOM also showed that a domain alone does not make an internet success.  Here is a short list of failures:

Famous Domain Failures:

  • pets.com (now owned by petsmart)
  • MVP.com
  • Startups.com (ok, not the same as the company in the movie, but the movie is better than the company) (NOW STARTUPS.COM is a great daily deal site for small businesses to get deals from other startups.
  • boo.com (bloow $188 million in 6 months)
  • open.com
  • theglobe.com

So to the point at hand - TERRIBLE STARTUP NAMES.  Some can get away with dropping some vowels or and a ly to the end, others opt for a domain hack with .me, .ly, .it, or some other international domain serving to complete the sentence.  But even group.me bought groupme.com (not sure if that was before or after microsoft gave them a big payday before profits).

But the reason so many companies are forced into terrible names is because every single 1 word domain in the english dictionary is taken.   Take a look.  You might find one or two, but they won't be good and I guarantee they won;t fit your business.  So what is an entrepreneur to do if you can't grab a good domain?
